Lars initially thinks he just stumbled upon some life-lengthening technology, he has no idea who Michael is or what nanomachines are
Suddenly Lars hears a whispering voice inside his own head leading him to a previously unexplored underground region
Moebius manipulated Michael (his old projection?) into finding lab42 (and later activating it), Lars subconsciously accepts this as his own decision to find out more about his mysterious condition
Lars fits the crystal and activates the dimensional machine while Sean is exploring it, causing Sean to be teleported to Terra

Lars is trapped into a suspension of the natural cycle of life and death, this causes him a lot of suffering
Lars sacrifices himself for the party during the course of the game, breaking out of his artificial suspension of samsara
Somebody manages to keep his consciousness alive (somehow, with the help of some good divinity)
He will eventually be resurrected and appear as his true self instead of Michael (different sprite, true Lars)
